A year later, another name change took place when Carpentier donated land for a new school district that included parts ofDuarte as well as other towns in northern Sonoma County including Petaluma and Rohnert Park. The city experienced significant growth during World War II due to its proximity toSonoma County military bases and civilian housing developments such as Monterey Peninsula Naval Air Station (now Naval Air Station El Toro). After the war, Duarte became an important center for agriculture with many factories manufacturing products such as automobiles, aircrafts and food items like applesauce and cheese

It lies on the east bank of the Santa Ana River and is bordered by Anaheim to the north, Garden Grove to the east, Fullerton to the south, and Irvine to the west. Duarte was founded in 1887 as a depot for cattle shipped from Kern County. The area now includes Duarte Heights and parts of what were once known as Westwood Village The post office servingDuarte was established on December 12, 1887. The first resident was Mrs. Geo Wetherington. A store and two homes were built in 1888 near present-day Park Boulevard and Flower Street; these buildings still stand today. In 1896 Duarte had its own schoolhouse; this building is no longer standing but can be seen in pictures around town dating back to that time. In 1907 an addition was made to Hall High School which became Duarte Junior College in 1951 when it merged with Fullerton Junior College (now part of USC). In 1917 an annex was added to Hall High School which became East High School when it merged with Garden Grove High School (now part of Fullerton Unified Schools District). In 1932 an annex also became attached to Garden Grove High School which became West High School when it merged with Irvine IndependentHigh School District (now part of UC Irvine). On October 15, 1941 both schools amalgamated into Central Valley Nazarene University being one campus until 1984 when it separated again becoming full-time UC Irvine Campus After World War II there were large numbers of people coming intoDuarte from other parts of Orange County such as Long Beach There were also many businesses started here during those years like Cement Company #2 & 3 which still stands today across from Park Blvd., which ran for over 100 years before going out of business in 2000
