In 1850, the United States acquired California from Mexico and granted land to various groups of Americans. In Duarte County, some settlers attempted to establish stores and plantations but these failed because of difficult terrain and lack of water resources. Duarte County became part of the newly created State of California in 1850. By 1861, however, most residents had moved away because of war with Confederate forces over control of Nevada Territory (now southern Nevada). Many Duartes returned during subsequent years as conditions improved in California; however, others continued to live here until after World War II when it was transferred to El Dorado County
