The town of Duarte, California was founded in 1849 by Manuel Nieto. The area that is now Duarte was part of the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1854, a group of American Mormons from Utah immigrated to Baja California and established the Mormon colony of Rancho Las Animas on the present-day townsite of Duarte. In 1858, when Mexican President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna ordered all American settlers in Baja California to leave or be deported, some 775 Americans--mostly Latter-day Saints--left for Rancho las Animas. Of these, only 25 men returned to live inDuarte after becoming naturalized U.S. citizens; the rest moved on to other parts of Mexico. Duarte's first post office opened in 1860, and its first store was operated by Aimee Hutchinson and her husband John Hutchinson. The town grew rapidly during the early years of gold mining here; one local resident recalled that “In a little over two years [1861-1862], we had doubled our population almost tenfold” (Foster).
