Duarte was founded in 1853 by José Francisco García, who named it for his paternal ancestor Domingo García. Duarte experienced some economic decline during the mid-20th century as production of oil and other minerals declined in Kern County; however, it has since resumed its role as a regional center for industry and commerce. The economy of Duarte is also supported by agriculture, which includes raising livestock and growing crops such as cotton and almond trees. The town has one high school, one middle school, and two elementary schools. The name "Duarte" means "the place where there are olive trees." The first Spaniard to visit this area was Isidro Barragán on August 29, 1769 while exploring southern Bakersfield Peninsula looking for a route to San Diego through Yuma Pass. He named the spot Arenas de las Olivetas (Olive Trees Fields). A year later he again visited this region when he explored Mono County between Mariposa Creek and Three Rivers Valley searching for new routes to San Diego City after discovering that Mexican missions were not working properly due to drought conditions in California. In 1853 José Francisco García settled here with his family after returning from Spain following la Guerra de Indias (1851-1852). His father had settled in Rancho Rinconada just west of present day Duarte about 1824/25 although no record exists of him ever having done so. Father Garcia built two adobe homes near what is now called Church Street - one still standing today (known as Villa Garcia) and another which has been replaced by a modern home on present day Dona Ana Boulevard north of Main Street; both homes were occupied until 1914 when they were sold to Mrs. Fannie Bowen Cumming who lived there until her death in 1959 before being donated to Duarte Historical Museum & Green House Village LLC under management of Msgr./Dragan Knezevic raised $4 million total for restoration project over 5 years In addition 2 NRHP grantees – Peter Costantini & Barry Rubin – designed extensive renovation including adding roofline & chimneys etc., reopening original doors/windowsiatrics insidehistoric buildings&restoring interior finishes including plastering false ceilings . Restoration began Spring 2009 & ended Fall 2014 without any major damage!

Duarte became a part of the Mexican Republic on February 14, 1821. On October 12, 1846, it became part of the United States of America following the Mexican-American War.
