Duarte is a small town located in Kern County, California. It is bordered by the Nevada desert to the east and west and by Fresno to the north. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. Duarte has a mix of Spanish-speaking and Anglo-American residents. The first Europeans to visit Duarte were José Antonio de Oñate and Gaspar de Portolá in 1769. In 1821, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla founded La Union, which became part of Mexico after it was conquered by Mexican General Bernardo Ruiz during the Mexican–American War. Luiseño cattle rancher Manuel Nieto purchased land in 1875 and built a ranch house known as "Alacran" on what is now Main Street. He changed its name to "Duarte" in honor of his brother Francisco Alonso De la Rúa y Ortiz (1786-1864), who had served as governor of Baja California from 1824 to 1830 and was one of Pánfilo Pico's most ardent supporters during that conflict. In 1911, Duarte voters passed an proposition authorizing annexation into Imperial Valley via Measure M which failed by two votes; however, since then it has been county seat for Kern County The post office at Duarte was established on December 12, 1860, under postal designation of Auburn; it changed its name to Duarte on November 15, 1861. The current post office building was completed in 1912. The community originally consisted only of a few homes with no school or other public services provided until 1882 when three schoolhouses were erected: one for grade schools (grades K-4), one for fifth through eighth grades (grades 9-12), and one for high school students between ninth through twelfth grades (grades 13-19). A fire destroyed all but two buildings on October 10th 1886 due to arson attributed to local teenagers who were not able to get help from their parents because they did not have any money for such things as insurance or fire permits On October 20th 1886 another barn caught fire after being hit by lightning resulting in $5 worth of damage done including $2 worth lost insurance claims Thereafter new efforts were made over time with some success before finally giving up around 1915 due largely because there simply wasn't enough money available In 1933 both Hudspeth Field Air Force Base located approximately 2 miles east side along U S Route 395 highway also known as “Death Valley” opened within 5 kilometers north east corner near acreage acquisition that included parts of present day Elk Grove Village 8 miles southwest corner just outside Phoenix Arizona desert much like today AFB locations are classified Duarte played host alternately every year from 1893 until 1954 inclusive at Camp Pendleton United States military base located adjacent Diego Garcia Island off Solomon Islands

The first Europeans to come to Duarte County were Spanish Jesuits who established a mission in 1769 near present-day Morro Bay. The mission was abandoned in 1776 because of Indian resistance and competition from other missions in the region. The first permanent settler in what is now Duarte County was José Antonio Aguilar y Costilla, who arrived with his family in 1827. Costilla married Maria de la Concepción Peralta and founded the town of San Miguel de Tucumán on Rancho Alamo Creek about four miles southeast of present-day Morro Bay. He also built a cabin at what is now known as Aguilar Station on Rancho Rinconada about two miles southwest of present-day San Miguel de Tucumán. Aguilar y Costilla’s heirs sold their holdings in Tucumán to Manuel Nieto in 1843 and began building a rancho at Coyote Hills about four miles northwest of San Miguel de Tucumán. Nieto named his rancho Santa Cruz del Norte after his hometown Santa Cruz, Spain (now Seville). herders from Rancho Rinconada started occupying Coyote Hills around 1850; they developed irrigation systems for growing corn, beans, cotton and other crops on large farms east of Coyote Hills between 1851 and 1865. At least one group platted an area called Horse Heaven Hill near Coyote Hills before it was abandoned by livestock owners during the 1860s because there wasn’t enough water available for them to maintain their herds there
