On October 3, 1912Duarte voters approved incorporation into Kern County by referendum pursuant to an act of the State Assembly; this made Duarteto be one of only two U.S.-incorporated communities west of San Francisco that did not ratify Proposition 12 (the Admission Act). In 1923 local resident Franklin D Roosevelt announced he would run for President on a platform supporting statehood for California; his campaign slogan was "Ich bin ein Californier." When he won with over 60% of the vote in November 1924, Roosevelt's victory helped spur development inDuarte and other areas within what is now Kern County while also creating new jobs throughout much of central California due to federal housing policy then in place. Today there are more than 1 million residents living within its boundaries and many businesses have grown up around retail trade or professional services including law enforcement and government contracting services. Many people fromDuarte have moved away to larger cities such as Fresno or Bakersfield but some continue to live here year-round becauseof its temperate climate and mild winters which provide plenty of opportunity for outdoor activities such as skiing and snowboarding at nearby resorts like Mammoth Mountain Resort or Yosemite National Park .
