Duarte is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. Duarte was founded in 1851 by José Joaquín Duarte and is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of Fresno County. The name "Duarte" means "the right bank." The town's first post office was established in 1852, and its first settlers were Mexican immigrants who had come to this area from central Mexico to work on the railroad. In 1854, a group of English-speaking farmers named John Cranch bought land in what is now Duarte from José Joaquín Duarte and began to settle it. They named their new community after General Santa Anna, who had defeated Mexico at Ojo de la Cruz during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1855, efforts were made to create a connection between San Francisco and Monterey Bay through an overland route called "The Alameda Trail". This trail would have followed present-day Highway 84 from Monterey to Daly City before continuing northward along present-day Highway 101 until it reached Davis Strait near Eureka; however, this project never progressed beyond planning stages because of financial difficulties. In 1861, local residents voted to join Fresno County as one unit for political reasons rather than continue to compete with other counties for funding for public schools. That year saw also the founding of the First Baptist Church in Duarte. In 1865, Don Fernando Flores married María Antonieta Gomez y Arellano (née García), daughter of Rancho Viejo ranch owner Juan Gomez y Arellano (1798–1875). This marriage marked Hispanic settlement in what is now eastern Fresno County and helped spur development aroundDuarte Creek where they planted corn and grapes under irrigation ditches built by their father-in-law Carlos Rodriguez y Ramos (1801–1868). Duarte, California was founded in 1849 by Isidro Dominguez and his brother Pedro. The post office at the time was called Sutterville. The town became a part of San Francisco in 1850. In 1874, the railroads arrived and Duarte quickly grew as a stopping place for trains racing through the Central Valley to Stockton and Sacramento. In 1905, the city built its first electric streetlights. The Duarte Dam was completed in 1935 and has played an important role in irrigation and water management for much of Southern California over the years.
