Duarte is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. Duarte is located on State Route 99 and it is part of the Victorville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what would become Duarte was José María Francisco de la Cruz y Costilla, who arrived in 1848. He named his new settlement after Antonio José de Sucre, 1st Marquis of Carabobo and general in the Venezuelan War of Independence. The town proper was founded on May 15, 1855 by Blas Sánchez Cerda and others from San Bernardino County as Campo Grande del Norte (later renamed to Donacona). A post office opened in 1870 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1876, local businessmen formed the Victor Valley irrigation District to provide water for agriculture throughout Kern County. In 1887 the district merged into the Kern Water District which still provides water toDuarte today. The city of Victorville incorporated as a result of this merger onJanuary 1, 1907; Duarte became an unincorporated community within Victorville Municipal Court jurisdiction. On November 6, 1914 voters passed a proposition to create a consolidated school district with parts of other townships within Kern County but no vote took place as it did not include Duarte due to its small size and lack of infrastructure such as schools or libraries; however school buses do serve both towns now). and two years later when that proposal failed they created their own consolidated school district which included all but one township within their boundaries (Donacona being excluded because it had already been part of another consolidated school district). Duarte is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first European to explore and chart the Santa Fe Trail passed through Duarte in 1847 on his way from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Sacramento. On July 4th, 1849, Spanish explorer José Antonio de Borja y Costilla named what is now Duarte after Don Francisco D'Urrea y Valdés who had accompanied him on his trip east of Baja California Sur. Duarte was founded by prospectors in September 1860 as a stop on their route between San Francisco and Yuma City. The town's first post office was established in 1861 by Wm Fenton with P Davison as clerk and David Hildebrandt as treasurer. In 1865 it became the seat for Kern County when it was created from parts of Monterey County and Tuolumne County. The name has been variously retained throughout its history: "Duarte", "Duarte", or simply "DUARTE". In 1912 an oil refinery operated by Shell Oil Company opened at nearby Anza Fields that remains an important local industry today. In 1917 Supervisor John Sutter proclaimed October 15th as Bullfighting Day in memory of George Custer who had fought at Palo Alto several days earlier during the Mexican-American War (1846–48). A civic center was built here in 1928 which served as home to the Duarte School District until 1978 when they moved to Fullerton Unified School Districts campus north of downtown Duarte. The original plaza now features a performing arts theater called La Plaza del Angel which presents plays and ballet annually since 1985 headlined by Puccini's Tosca with SETI Institute support programming following each performance; originally designed for public use only prior to these special events some years later due to increased attendance this plaza has become also a popular tourist destination for locals and visitors alike!
