Duarte, California is an unincorporated community located in Kern County, California. The population was 2,572 at the 2000 census. Duarte was founded on September 25, 1875 by prospectors John W. Dutton and George A. Hargrave. It was named after Captain Manuel Gomez de la Cruz who had surveyed the area for the Central Pacific Railroad in 1869-70. The first gun in Duarte was a rifle that John W. Dutton bought from Manuel Gomez de laCruz for $5 in 1875 when he started trading guns with settlers hereabouts

The Main Street community had 1 grocery store (Albertson's) until it closed down in 2009 due to financial difficulties; since then Duarte has only two convenience stores - Safeway and Trader Joe's - as well as two service businesses providing health care: Kaiser Permanente/West Covina Medical Center and Best Care Health Services Incorporated. A new hospital is being built just south of town on mile marker 154 road which will serve the local area and surrounding counties. There are plans for an additional four business districts totaling twenty-four stores that would be anchored by major restaurant chains: Jamba Juice (JBS), Subway sandwich shops (SMART), Dunkin' Donuts franchisees (DNKN), Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurants (CMG) as well as KFC locations ([[Target]]). In addition to this multiple anchor development there have been plans for office buildings housing various types of businesses such as medical offices/specialty hospitals/retail stores etc., but these have not yet come to fruition because of lack of funding

The site of the town was chosen for its strategic location on the route from Mexico City to Monterey Bay. The name "Duarte" is Spanish for "valley." The town was founded in 1824 by José Antonio Dominguez and Mariano Escobar. In 1842, it became part of Alta California after a battle between American and Mexican forces. It was named for General Jesús Dominguez y Costilla, who had led an American force against Mexican forces at Cerro Gordo in 1840.
