Duarte is a small town in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, United States. Duarte is located on the Año Nuevo River and lies at an elevation of 2,083 feet (609 m). The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Duarte were Spanish missionaries who arrived in 1769. The mission was founded by Father José de Anchorena and Brothers Juan Francisco and Miguel de la Cueva. In 1821, Mexican land grants were made to various parties including Manuel Nieto and José María Carrera who laid out new townships called Rancho Rinconada for ranching operations. In 1876, John Dutton started leasing mineral rights from Antonio Sánchez on the bank of the Año Nuevo River for $5 per acre ($25 per km²). By 1886 Dutton had developed over 20 miles (32 km) of irrigated farming land that included present dayDuarte, Arroyo Seco, Pacheco Canyon and parts of Potrero Hill and Beachwood Hills. After several years during which few crops were grown due to lack of rainfall or unfavorable soil conditions, Dutton decided to build a large irrigation system using dykes and canals as well as a power complex with five steam engines which he named "The Dutton Project". He hired George Eastman Company engineers to design his system which became known as "The Eastman System" after its founder. Duarte's incorporation as a city occurred on April 5th, 1911 when it became one of 16 cities in Santa Clara County newly organized under California Proposition 8 referendum results that year legalizing gay marriage statewide as well as insertional voting for other local government positions withinSanta Clara County unifying all its municipalities into one entity under state law - despite opposition from many residents living withinDuarte boundaries who saw their village status unchanged even though they voted against Prop 8 overall. There are also numerous smaller developments scattered throughout Duarte proper such as: Playground Village retail center behind Valley Fair Shopping mall just north northeast cornerof First St & Mission Blvd.; Century Village shopping center on Second Street NE between Third Ave & Mission Blvd.; Highlands Mall immediately adjacentto Century Village Shopping Center; Anthem Landing adjoininginnerspaceofCenturyVillageMallknownasthe"Homeslots." Duarte is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. Duarte was founded by Mexicans in 1871, and it became an American military base during World War II. Duarte is now a ghost town with only a few remaining residents. The town's history began on December 1, 1871 when Mexican soldiers from Pinos Altos arrived to establish a trading post in what is now the townsite of Duarte. A year later, the first school in the area was built, and within two years, there were also stores, churches, and other buildings. By 1875, Duarte had become an important center for trade in the region. In that year, Captain Elisha Brouncker established Camp Grant as one of three U.S. military posts in quick succession along the Arizona-New Mexico border after victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Pass. In 1886–87 Commodore John D’Italio represented California at Panamanian President José Santos Soto’s invitation to arbitrate disputes between Nicaraguan and Costa Rican farmers over land claims near Los Banos on Lake Nicaragua; he arrived at San Miguel de Allende on October 5th of that year with his wife Alice Fenton D’Italio (the daughter of his friend James Fenton) to investigate this potential land grab by Nicaraguan investors who had leased some 3 million acres (10 km2) of desert country without compensation to Costa Ricans since1885! Commodore D’Italio found evidence that Nicaraguan squatters were taking title deeds from rural landowners through fraudulent means and ordered them driven out with violence; he also confiscated equipment and supplies being used by these usurpers! These measures removed much of what characterized as early 21st century Nicaragua: ThereafterDuarte grew slowly but steadily into its present day form: Situated atop an intermittent uplift within rolling desert hills above crystal blue waters lapping offshore estuaries,' surrounded by rugged mountains and scrubby brushlands,'Duarte today remains one of America's most isolated towns—and perhaps its most haunted!' From its inception as a small outpost serving primarily Mexican traders until 1905 when it became garrisoned by U.S Marines under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter ('Old Surety') following General Antonio Lopez Robles' victory against Spanish forces at Cerro Gordo – which led directly to America's entry into World War I – Duarte served as both a supply depot for Marine Corps troops deployed throughout Southwest Asia (1917-1918), as well as providing living quarters for Marines quartered ashore during World War II.' During its heydayDuarte boasted 2 brick churches dating back to 1886 (both destroyed by fire circa 1923), several hotels including 'The Hotel Californian' built c 1890/91', 4 schools including 'Pico High School','Gracias Forza Santa Barbara County','The High School for Gifted Youngsters'built 1934-'35', 3 businesses including 'Anchor Steamboat Store','The Shoeshine Shop','Andalusia Cafe'/Barbecue Joint/Bakery/Cafeteria etc., 7 ranches(3 cattle & 6 horses), 3 homesites - 1 currently owned & operated museum - each comprising unique historical features such as original adobe walls & roofing materials still extant (& 2 are replica adobes), 10 miles (~16 km) long unpaved road leading into town proper from 17 miles (~27 km) inland via Kern Valley('Peak oil time'), 11 miles (~20 km) wide Main Street traversing ridges high enough apart (.5 mile (.6 kilometer)) so mail could not be delivered east or west then down Main Street again all the way back up ($1 per delivery!), Duarde has always been homebirth place for many notable local residents including author Lillian Hellman (b born 1915 hereabouts), actors Humphrey Bogart ('High Sierra'), Cary Grant ('A View To A Kill'), Ava Gardner ('Destination Moon'); professional golfer Phil Mickelson (); folk singer Woody Guthrie (); actor Glenn Ford (); basketball coach Rick Majerus (); attorney Roy Cohn ().
