The area now known as Duarte was first named Gaviota by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo for a sound he heard when sailing along the Pacific coast of Mexico in 1542. A Spanish mission was established at what is now downtown Duarte on November 22, 1821 by José Joaquin El Escobar y Costilla with the name Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Carmelo. In 1876, it became part of neighbor Valleyburg and in 1889 it became part of Los Angeles County. The town has a hot springs that began to be used by Native Americans in the late 19th century. In 1850, General Richard Custer destroyed an Indian village west of present-day Del Norte after being rebuffed by their chiefs in an attempt to gain access to water supplies along the Santa Monica Mountains. This led to one of history's most famous skirmishes between American and Mexican forces while also inspiring author Bret Harte's song "The Battle Hymn Of The Republic". After General Kearney's disastrous [1868] march through Northern California into Baja California devastated much of that region including Rancho La Brea Adobe where Harte lived until her death aged 72 years old on October 20, 1928 - many people speculated about how Kearny might have fared if he had continued down Highway 1 instead Interstate 15) - some settlers decided to build a small town around what would become known as Heceta Mesa which lay just southwest (west from today's Loop 101)of General Kearney's original battlefield site near present day Yorba Linda Village.* Some early residents were Wm Sutter (founder), Jedediah Smith (Ekowah Chief), Lawrence Wright (Mayor), Gold Rush prospectors J P Moran and J F Webber* * See footnote for more detail about Heceta Mesa

In 1912 duartes main street was renamed California Boulevard to honor then-Governor Pareja. The Duarte Mines operated until 1919 when they were closed due to lack of ore being found. During World War II duarte served as an airfield for American forces flying training missions over Los Angeles County. After the war duarte resumed its commercial growth with new resorts being built such as Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs. However, during the late 1990s there were several problems with this growth including environmental damage caused by oil spills; however, these have since been resolved.
