Duarte is a small town in the Central Valley of California, United States. It is located on the banks of the Feather River, east of Fresno and west of Bakersfield. The first European to visit what is now Duarte was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 14, 1542, when he and his men came ashore from their ship "El Pintor" at what is now called Point Conception (now known as Yerba Buena). A year later they founded Mission Dolores there. In 1843, Captain John Sutter founded Atascadero along the Feather River near present day Duarte. He decided to build a fortification against attack by Native Americans but died before completion. After Sutter's death his widow donated land for a school and hospital in 1845 which became Duarte's first post office; it opened in 1849. In 1850 George Hearst acquired Rancho Cerrillos from Santiago Alvarado and began developing it into what is today Duarte City Limits Park(). It was here that Hearst erected his most famous building – The Castle – which still stands today within city limits park boundaries! By 15th century AD advances in artillery technology had made lead shot obsolete as a common projectile (Goudie 1911) – guns could now be used exclusively with cannonballs made of wrought iron or wood! Rifle Rounds In 1908 an American engineer named John Trenchard designed a cartridge that would enable rifles to shoot roundshot instead of solid shot (Walsh 1945). The town took its name from Don José Antonio Mejía who founded it in 1887 along with his brother Zacarias Mejía (1860-1936) and their father Pablo de la Vega (1798-1867). Don José's wife Concepción Amador y Guerra (1847-1920) married him on February 20, 1892 in Bakersfield; they had two children: don Jose Antonio and Concepcião Amador Guerra Muñoz y Pardo y Maldonado (1894-1973). Duarte was founded in 1854 by the Mexican American pioneers José Duarte and Manuela García. The town was named for José's father, Pedro Duarte, who had been born in 1821 in the Mexican state of Baja California. In 1907, the town had a population of 810 people. It declined after World War II because of the decrease in immigration to California. The first high school in Duarte was built in 1915 and closed when it became Union High School. The first branch library opened in Duarte in 1951. In 1957, a new post office was established at Duarte and it remained open until 1978 when it moved to its present location on Main Street. The main street is also home to the old Juanita High School which served as a elementary school from 1915 until 1983 when it merged with Pico Rivera Elementary School to form Pico Rivera Middle/High School.
