It was incorporated as a city in 1959. In 1865, Mexican entrepreneur José Angel Mora established a flour mill on the banks of the East Fork of the Stanislaus River in what is now downtown Duarte. In 1874 Mora married Californian Isabella Valdez-López and they naming their new home after her father-in-law Francisco López y Gasset who had founded La Mesilla del Norte (later Rancho Los Alamos) east of elbow on the San Joaquin River. The Moras were among early settlers to come to Duarte and started out raising corn and wheat until 1876 when they bought land for grazing cattle on which they built a frame house with adobe walls that still stands today. They also began growing fruit trees such as nectarine, peach, apricot, plums and figs which soon made them well known in surrounding villages for their delicious produce. During World War II there was heavy bombing raids against nearby cities including Fresno and Bakersfield that caused extensive damage to homes and businesses Within weeks of each raid some local businesses had reopened but most structures were either destroyed or damaged beyond repair; many never saw another day due to being unusable because hidden bomb debris lay scattered throughout entire levels inside buildings." duartecity website
