Dixon is a small town in Sonoma County, California, United States. It lies on the banks of the Colusa River, south of Siskiyou National Forest. The population was 7,526 at the 2010 census. Dixon was founded in 1869 by pioneers John and Emma Dixon. In honor of their finding, Dixon has been called "The City on the River." Dixon's history can be traced back to 1869 when pioneer John and Emma Dixon found land north of Siskiyou National Forest on what is now known as State Route 12. The first post office in this area was established in 1870 and named Sulphur Springs after Charles Sulphur, a local rancher who donated land for the town site. This location served as a transportation stop for early settlers traveling between Sonoma County and Sacramento until 1883 when State Route 12 was completed linking these two counties into one unit. In 1886, Dixon incorporated as a town under the name Sulphur Springs with an population of 10 residents. In 1914, it changed its name to Dixon because of rising tensions over mineral rights near Siskiyou National Forest that had led to several skirmishes between Native Americans and white settlers over years previous. However, only two years later (1916) Dixon became part ofSonoma County when it was annexed by the county from Marin County. The city's growth continued through World War II when thousands of soldiers moved into town to fight in Europe; however, most people left during or after the war ended. Todayadays, Dixon stands as an important community within Sonoma County due to its rich agricultural history which goes back centuries; its rich architecture which features examples such as a stately Thompson House built in 1907; or its extensive infrastructure which includes several schools and hospitals along with numerous businesses including Apple Inc.'s headquarters since 1984 (the first company ever located inside Super Bowl stadiums). Although there are many other things drawing people to live here such as winegrowing operations or skiing resorts nearby (Silliman Valley Resort & Spa being one recent example), it is still easy to see why Dixon has been dubbed "The City on the River" for so many decades!

In 1865, Indian hostilities led to a conflict which saw several people killed and many homes destroyed early in the morning of November 14th when white men working on irrigation projects discovered an encampment of Apaches near Ouray Creek Bridge (now Old Adobe Road). A civil war-related massacre took place three weeks later when white soldiers guarding against Apaches fatally shot nine unarmed Indians including five women and four children while they slept inside their lodges nearpresent-day Dixon High School football field
