Dixon is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno–Madera metropolitan area. The first holsters were patented by George Dixon on December 3, 1892. Dixon was founded by John Dixon in 1847 as a small community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. In 1865, it became an incorporated town and has been continuously inhabited since then. The town's early history is reflective of its location on the river: Dixon was located on land that had been acquired from Native Americans by Captain George Hearst and his brother-in-law, James Irvine. At first, Dixon functioned as a seasonal outpost for fishermen who used the river for transportation and fishing supplies. Dixon also prospered through agriculture; crops such as cotton, rice, and sorghum were grown in the area until World War II when farming underwent a dramatic transformation due to advances in technology. The city of Dixon grew up around thetown's downtown core, which includes a library, art museum, and several restaurants and stores. The cityscape of Dixon is characterized by wide streets that are lined with businesses and residential buildings dating back to before World War I. Many of these structures remain standing today including Dodge & Son store (now part of Macy’s), City Hall Annex (now home to the San Joaquin Valley Museum), businessman’s row (including Jane Addams house and Wickersham House), and many other historic homes and businesses. Downtown also features a number of large public works projects such as the current renovation project of City Hall which began in 2009 and is scheduled to be completed in 2020. In addition to its downtown core, Dixon has two other major areas: North Side which is located along Interstate 5 between Fresno County northward and Stanislaus County eastward; South Side which is located south of I-5 between Shasta County eastward and Kern County westward. These two regions are primarily rural with few commercial properties or services located within their boundaries; however they do have some notable exceptions including several shopping malls situated within North Side or South Side neighborhoods
Dixon was founded by Horace Dixon in 1876. Dixon is located in the Kern County seat of Bakersfield. The town became a city in 1912 and was named after Horace Dixon's father, Augustus Dixon.
