The first permanent settler in what is now Dixon arrived in 1881, when James Dixon purchased 160 acres east of Big Bear Lake for $10 per acre. He named his new community "Dixon" after his ancestor Daniel Dixon, who had settled in that area centuries earlier. By 1890, however, most residents wereprimarily farmers or ranch hands living near big water supplies such as Big Bear Lake or Mono Creek Valley (now known as Yosemite National Park).
