Dixon, California is a small town in Butte County, California, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera-Clovis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Dixon has been inhabited for over one thousand years and is said to have been named for John Dixon (1793-1851), an American pioneer and explorer who explored parts of what are now Fresno and Madera Counties. A post office was established at Dixon in 1868, and it became a town in 1893. In 1957, it incorporated as a city. Dixon's history begins with its first settler, John Murchison (), who arrived in 1853 on the Siskiyou River. The area that would become Dixon was then unincorporated territory adjacent to the present day towns of Fresno and Madera counties. In 1863 Pacific Grove merchants James Wickersham and George Hearst donated land east of Dixon on what is now Old Central Road to establish their new townsite; they named it after themselves but later changed the name to "Dixon". On December 21, 1868, Dixon had its first election as a city with two members to represent it in The City Council; at that time there were seven cities within Butte County: San Joaquin (northwest of San Francisco), Placer (southwest of Sacramento), Nevada City (east of Modesto), Auburn (northeast of Stockton), Colusa (southwest of Visalia), and Shasta Lake (northwest of Sacramento). In 1907 an act passed by Congress designated Butte County as an agricultural county so that larger villages like Dixon could be located closer to markets for their goods without having to travel far into residential areas; this resulted in more people moving into the area around Dixonville during this time period. By 1930 there were 688 residents living in downtown Dixon; however by 1940 only 256 people remained due largely to World War II military drafted replacements flooding into rural areas throughout California during that decade. During the war many industries relocated or closed down including smelting operations near Lakeside while other factories such as foundries employment increased due to wartime shortages elsewhere in America not just within California but also nationally. After the war ended workers returned home from overseas postings but most businesses did not reopen until after economic modernization programs began under President Lyndon B Johnson which led directly to increased job opportunities for local residents following ratification of Proposition 13 by voters statewide on November 4th 1964 making all public property subjectto private ownership thereby providing incentives for businesses growth along with tax breaks etcetera which helped spur economic development even further among civilians within our community especially those employed within government institutions such as schools & universities across our state Capitol complex known collectively as Downtown Diamond Valley or simply "The Valley" since 1965 when Interstate 5 was routed through town center instead) One result directly resulting from these changes was increased traffic congestion on local streets leading up Olive Street leading out onto Crescent Ave.,aidenningly nicknamed "The Beltway" because it once served as one major route connecting Los Angeles with Fresno via Highway 99 freeway north thereof before becoming I-5 again circa 1990s although today much smaller portions still connect Downtown Diamond Valley (& northern Sierra Nevada) via various routes including State Route 509/SR 511 approximately 7 miles long between SR 509 & SR 411 northeastward from downtown)
In 1852, John Dixon founded the town of Dixon in Contra Costa County, California. Dixon was named for John D. Rockefeller, who donated land to the town.
