On July 15, 1870, following passage of an act legalizing white settlement in California, present-day Dixon incorporated as a town under the name "Dixon". A fire destroyed most of the original buildings in November 1871 while flames raged through nearby Arroyo Grande; but new structures were built quickly and incorporation took place on January 1st of that year. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dixon has a total area of , all land. As of the census[1] of 2000,[2] there were 2,865 people,[3] 1,567 households,[4] and 812 families residing in the town. The population density was 568 people per square mile (217/km²). There were 1,969 housing units at an average densityof 291 per square mile (117/km²). The racial makeup ofthe town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latinoof any racewere 3%.
