It is bordered by Bakersfield to the north, La Quinta to the east, Lancaster to the south, and Dos Palos Hills to the west. The name "Dixon" comes from two Spanish words: "dónde" meaning "where", and "vida" meaning "life". In 1849 Pioneers named their settlement after General Sam Houston who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Dixon was founded by brothers John and James Dixon on October 10th 1850. John Dixon had come overland from Illinois with his family for $4 per capita in gold nuggets that he inherited from his father-in-law, George Washington Rossiter. James Dixon purchased land from Captain William Folsom. The first post office was established at Dixon on July 21st 1852 under the name of San Bernardino de la Paz (now called Haltom City). The town grew rapidly due to its location near two major rivers and access to water resources including wells drilled in what is now known as downtown Dixon. By 1870 there were three stores, six hotels, nineteen schools (ranging in grades K-12), three churches and a railroad station serving as an important link between rural residents and central Bakersfield. A fire destroyed one of the older stores on Main Street in 1875 which limited development but created a demand for new buildings which continue until this day with many businesses around Main Street today including doctor's offices and law firms etc..

There are also several schools located within the town limits: Alpine School District No. 2 (grades K-8), Alpine Valley Elementary School (grades pre-K through 4), Middleton Intermediate School (5-6th grades), Dixon High School (7-8th grade), Agricultural High School (9-12th grades) As well as a couple convenience stores and other businesses including A&W Drive In restaurant, Laundromat, Hartnell's Hardwarestore, PC World Store The first post office at Dixon opened on July 16, 1855 with Wm Henson as the first clerk. The office moved to its present location on State Route 9 just west of the junction with SR 99 in 1907 after John Dixon donated land for it. Population growth slowed until 1938 when it reached 350 people due to World War II related factors such as increased commuting from nearby LOS ANGELES or SAN FRANCISCO areas for work or war efforts during that time period
