In 1865, John Dixon, a pioneer rancher and landowner in the area now known as Dixon, California, patented a piece of property that would become the site of his future business. The first house on this tract of land was built in 1867 by Dixon's brother-in-law Nicholas Wright. By 1880, John Dixon had established himself as a successful real estate agent and agriculturalist in the region. In 1892, he donated 640 acres to the community for use as a parkland. The city of Dixon was incorporated on July 1, 1903. The name was chosen to reflect its history as an agricultural center and place where people from all over came to trade goods and services. At one point during its early years, it contained more than 100 businesses employing nearly 2,000 people. In 1907, Southern Pacific Railway built a line from Bakersfield through Dixon and other towns on the eastern edge of Kern County to Atascadero on the Central Coast. This added some much-needed jobs to what had been an agricultural community; but also led to increased traffic on local roads which caused problems for local officials and residents alike. In 1916 when there was talk of building another railroad through Dixon into Atascadero—a project that would have greatly benefited both communities—the citizens voted not to build it because they felt it would be detrimental to their economy. Dixon has seen several changes over time including becoming less rural, more diverse and more developed due in part to Interstate 5 running through it as well as businesses moving into town from outlying areas such as Bakersfield or Stockton during the 1990s and 2000s demographic changes throughout California which made Dixon more racially diverse than ever before. Despite these recent changes however, Dixon still retains its small-town feel with tightknit relationships between its residents that are often unbreakable even when faced with difficult odds or challenges%.
