Dixon, California is a small town in the mountains of Northern California. It was founded in 1864 by John Dixon and his family. The town had a population of just under 100 people when it was platted in 1867. Dixon has been around since before the Gold Rush, and its history can be found throughout the years. The first settlers to arrive were John Dixon’s brothers, James and Joseph. They built a cabin on the edge of what is now Dixon Township. In 1865, John Dixon married Anna McNaught and they started a small farm near today’s Middle School Road. By 1870, the Dixons had moved to their present home at 7 miles east of town on High Street. Dixon saw some impressive improvements during its early years including road construction (the first in the area) that connected it with other towns in nearby Mono County. In 1872, locals voted to incorporate as a village under the name “Dixon” but this idea was quickly abandoned due to objections from adjacent communities that felt they would get more business from being part of one big town than two separate ones. In 1884, after many years of debate over whether or not to annex Mono County into California because thereof there would be an influx of white settlers into what was then an all-black township, residents finally approved annexation by voting 73-0 for incorporation into “Los Angeles County” – although they continued to use their own name for their community until 1912 when they officially changed it to Dixon Village effective January 1st that year pursuant to state law which allowed villages within larger municipalities greater autonomy/influence/responsibility vis-à-vis municipal services etcetera). It wasn't until 1907 when voters in neighboring Lassen County added three more townships (Gulch Valley (nowRedding), Tooele and Whitneyville) making up what is now Southern Nevada County and giving birth finally to Carson City – although much earlier efforts were made theretoback prior thereto! This growth pattern continued unabated until 1929 when western Mojave National Preserve was created covering most of southern Nevada counties adding another 4 additional townships making up today's Carson City metropolitan area; along with Reno & Sparks forming Washoe County concurrently! John Fenton Dixon also played an important role during these early days as he served as mayor twice between 1878-1879 and 1880-1881; treasurer from 1886-1889; assessor from 1889-1890; justice of peace from 1901-1905; supervisor general district 6 administrative officer 1903 - 1906; member senate 1902 - 1909 inclusive where he chaired subcommittee on public records 1916 - 1918 inclusive where he chaired Subcommittee on Post Office Administration 1919 - 1921 inclusive where he chaired Subcommittee on Water Resources 1922 - 1923 inclusive where he resigned due to ill health! He also served as president pro tem 1924 & 1925! The late John Fenton Dixon authored several books about his life including "A History Of The Town Of Dixon Village" published 1978 ISBN 0 9551450 8
