Dixon is a small town in Inyo County, California, located within the boundaries of the Mojave Desert National Preserve. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area. Dixon was founded in 1877 by Mormon pioneers as a trading post on the edge of what is now known as Nevada City. Ammunition production began here in 1892 and continued until 1926 when all but one manufacturing plant closed due to World War I restrictions on ammunition exports. Today, Dixon is home to two ammunition Manufacturers: Winchester and Berger (manufacturer of rifle rounds). The history and production of these two companies are intertwined: Winchester started making shotgun rounds in 1907, Berger produced rifle rounds for both Winchesters and other firearms from 1915 until 1966 when they merged with Browning Arms & Ammo Company Inc., which continued produce rifle rounds under its own name until 1984. Ammunition manufacture has resumed at various facilities throughout southern CA since World War II; however, most ammunition production takes place outside Dixon proper within the Mojave Desert National Preserve where it enjoys greater protected environment against pollution and pests.
