This program led to increased production and distribution of revolver rounds as well as various types of ammunition for handguns. Today, Dixon is home to one of the largest ammunition manufacturing plants in the country with over 500 employees working on producing all types of ammo from reloading primers to high capacity shotgun rounds.

The original settlers were miners from Northern Nevada who had been trapped underground during the Gold Rush in 1858-59. They set up camp on the banks of the Sacramento River where they built a ferry to bring goods and passengers upriver. In 1887 John Dixon bought land northwest of San Francisco for $1,000 from James Woolley. He named it Dixon after himself and his wifeMary Jane (née Cobb). A year later he built a two-story house on what became east side of Main Street which still stands today as an important part of the community center complex. In 1898 John Dixon's eldest son Harry died in an automobile accident while driving across country to visit family members back home in Canada; this left Harry's widow Mary Jane widowed again at age 47 years old with 5 children to support: Ronald (1899-1953), Gladys (1900-1983), Alice (1901-1987), Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (born May 20th 1903)and Kathleen 'Kathy' Armstrong née Decker (January 15th 1907 – May 1st 1984). Of these five children only Kathy Armstrong survived into adulthood. After her father's death she took over management of their rancho located about 8 miles northeast of present day Dixon along renamed Hwy 55 just south of mile marker 54 on Rte 199 when that route was rerouted via I-580 becoming I-680 eastbound & Ilette Road westbound going through present day Ceres Junction then paralleling US HWY 680 until it intersected US HWY 49 northbound near Mud Lake founder’s place now known as Rancho San Joaquin then680 became Hwy 50 southbound passing within sight of present day Hillsboro before rejoining Ilette Road eastbound concurrent with US HWY 680 approachingpresentdayCeres JunctionHillsboro

By 1909 it had declined to 50 residents and ceased operations due to decline in population and lack of businesses. In 1916 the community was added to the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Siskiyou County Historical District. Today, Dixon is a small village that retains many of its historical features such as its courthouse and library. It also continues to be home to a large number of farmers and ranchers who live near the local creek which supplies their farms with waterfowl and other animals
Dixon was founded in 1853 by James Dixon, a banker. The town was named for James Dixon's brother-in-law, John Dixon. In 1861, the town became an agricultural center when the first irrigation system was built there. In 1912, Dixon became an incorporated city.
