Dixon is a small town in Los Angeles County, California, located on the east side of the city of Los Angeles. It is part of the Pomona-Reedley-Monterey Park census area and has a population of 24,703 as of 2010. The first airguns were developed in Dixon by Clarence Smith in 1924. Airguns began to be used for hunting small game such as rabbits and squirrels in 1925. The first airgun target was established at Dixon Municipal Airport in 1927. In 1934, Jack Walters started manufacturing his own airguns which he named "Walters guns" after himself and his brother John Walters who operated a gun shop next door at that time. By 1939, Dixon had become one of the most popular shooting areas in Los Angeles County because it was known for its large yards and well stocked ranges where people could shoot handguns and rifles without fear of hitting someone else or themselves. In 1938, Air rifle company AAF was founded by Prentice Albright with the goal of selling American made air rifles to other countries such as China and Russia. After World War II ended, many American manufacturers closed their doors including Air Rifle Company AAF which folded in 1948 following allegations that they were supplying weapons to communist forces during the war. However, some examples of these companies still remain today including Century Arms Incorporated (now owned by Sig Sauer) which manufactures 1911 pistols; Browning Firearms Corporation (now part of Glock Holding Co., Inc.) which manufactures handguns; Savage Arms Corporation (now owned by Savage Sports & Hunting Technologies) which produces sporting rifles; Asahi Kasei Chemical Industry LTD., now Alliant Techsystems Corp., produces fireworks products under the name "Alliant". After World War II ended there were an increase number new shooters coming into Southern California from all over America looking for an opportunity to shoot firearms unencumbered by regulations that had been put into place since peacetime when guns were more restricted than they are now due to fears that communists might gain control over firearms within our borders again should peace never return again. Many people who moved here during this period found success starting their own businesses either importing or making their own firearms such as Clarence Smith's original airguns Manufacturing Company #1 which became Century Arms Incorporated while others like Jack Walters continued producing guns until his death in 1957 leaving behind a legacy that continues today with many talented individuals throughout Southern California striving to keep up with what Jack Walters did 50 years ago!
