On October 16th, 1922, when California Statehood was granted to the state of California, Dinuba became part as one of its first reflexes. The town had a population of 190 people in 1920 and peaked at 248 in 1940 before declining steadily over the next few decades due to various factors such as commuting distance and industry relocation to larger towns around Fresno. However, recent development has seen an increase in activity including new housing developments and businesses within walking distance of both downtown Dinuba (the business district) and nearby rural communities that have become known for their winegrowing abilities. In 1990-1991 a total relief effort helped alleviate flash flooding that had devastated parts of northern Fresno County due to rains caused by El NiñoSouthern Oscillation (ENSO). This event is commonly referred to as "Dinuba's Katrina" because much damage occurred within two blocks of Highway 395 which forms Dinuba's Main Street artery
