The first white person to reside in Diamond Bar was George Hearn who came overland from Oregon in 1853. He built a cabin on the side of a hill near present-day Highway 99. In 1882, Nicholas Italiano opened a grocery store at Eighth and Market Streets which became one of the most successful stores in Kern County. In 1886, Jens Jensen (1846-1917) bought land north of present-day Diamond Bar from Antonio Gomez for $10 per acre. He began building what would become known as Jensen's Ranch which consisted of six miles (10 km) of dirt roads leading to his farmstead that housed up to 20 cows, four horses and two pigs. By 1907, Jensen had increased his holdings to over 100 acres (40 ha). By 1916 he had built an impressive ranch house that still stands today on Second Street between Market and Elm Streets (). After World War II Jens Jensen died without leaving any children behind so his estate passed into the hands of descendants through marriage or inheritance until it was sold by their niece Sonya Jensen to local developer Harry Biddle in 1984 for $1 million (). Diamond Bar experienced heavy growth during its early days due to its location within easy reach of both San Joaquin Valley wine country and HollywoodMovie star Douglas Fairbanks Sr.'s Palm Springs home which surrounded him with many attractive women ().
