In the early 1800s, Diamond Bar was a small mining town in Southern California. The town was founded by prospectors looking for diamonds in the area. The first mine in Diamond Bar was opened in 1869 and produced about $3,000 per day. By 1870, diamondmining had become an important industry in the community and more than 80 mines were operating in the area. The population of Diamond Bar increased from 100 to over 1,200 during the late 1800s. The production at some of the mines continued until 1978 when all but one mine closed down due to high costs and loss of resources. By 1910,Diamond Bar had developed into a major center for diamond mining with more than 350 businesses employing around 2,000 people. In 1916, a new city hall and school were built in what is now downtown Diamond Bar. This building served as both municipal government headquarters as well as local schools until it burned down in 1951. In 1952, another new city hall and school were built on First Street south of downtown Diamond bar after voters approved a proposition to fund these projects through property taxes paid by citizens rather than state bonds which would have been necessary if they had been funded through taxation by the state government. With this new government structure,DiamondBar became self-sufficient as it no longer needed provincial or federal support to maintain its infrastructure such as streets and schools
