It is located on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and borders neighbouring Sun Valley to the south and east, Fontana to the north and west, and Riverside to the northwest. The first Europeans to visit Diamond Bar were Spanish explorers Hernando de Soto and Gaspar de Portolà in 1542. A mission was established here in 1839 by Father Francisco Quezon with help from Governor Manuel Nieto of Mexico City. A small post office operated here until 1855. In 1875, gold was discoverednearby at Enfield Hills. The discovery led to a large influx of miners into Diamond Bar as prospectors began striking out for rich veins of gold ore near Enfield Hills. By 1915 there were over 1,000 people working at various mine sites in what would be known as the Inland Empire Gold Rush Period; however most production ceased due to World War I shortages of resources. A new found town called Diamond Bar was founded by early settlers on November 17, 1912 based upon an assessment that there would be a large demand for goods brought overland from Kern County during the California Gold Rush era because no railroad existed between Bakersfield and San Bernardino county then. Over 100 other towns were founded during this time including Amador Heights (1915), Pearblossom (1920), West Covina (1925), North Covina (1925), Arroyo Grande (1926) and Desert View(1927). From 1916-1968 it was part of El Cajon township which also included Sun Valley Village, Fontana and Riverside municipalities then annexed bySan Bernardino County after statehood in 1911%. On October 1st 1968 it became its own municipality under local government laws repealed by Proposition 13 passed within days following passage of that measure legalizing annexation by county without voter approval or notification (). Many residents chose not to move away when their municipality became fully independent with many retaining their home inside city limits though some did leave for more suburban lifestyles outside city limits like Victorville within less than two years after becoming fully self-governing municipal entity (). On January 1st 2017 all but 10% of residential properties within city limits were transferred directly from El Cajon Township Municipal Services Districts used for public functions such as library services etc., back into Diamond Bar's hands effective immediately pending annexation proceedings with state government according to City Manager Jeff Levy . This caused much controversy as many homeowners had been living inside city limits for decades unaware their property had been transferred away while others such as Mayor Vince D’Angelo who has resided insidecity Limits since before incorporation felt betrayed that his beloved city may have lost some aspectsof its identity
