It is known for its thermal springs and as the location of the former Palm Springs Rancho Mirage Resort and Spa. The first people to live in desert hotSprings were members of the Tongva people who called it San Jacinto Creek. When Mission San Jacinto was founded in 1791, parts of what are now Palm Springs and Cathedral City were included within mission boundaries. In 1847, prospectors discovered coal gas reserves near present-day Hot Springs while exploring westward into what is now Nevada Territory. After some debate, Congress voted on Feb 15, 1848 to purchase 760 acres (295 ha) of land at what is now Desert Hot Springs from José Altamirano for $5 per acre ($20 per km²). In 1885, President Chester A. Arthur visited the area and recommended that Los Angeles be built on the south side of Antelope Valley because there would be more water available there than in any other part of Southern California except Palm Desert proper. The city began developing around this time with many new businesses opening up including hotels such as The Pasadena Place (now known as Four Seasons) and La Quinta Inn & Suites; mines such as Imperial Coal Company’s Tomahawk Mine; agricultural production such as citrus orchards; housing developments like Reseda Park; and recreational options like Mountain Village Golf Course which opened in 1912 just east of downtown Los Angeles on Wilshire Boulevard between New York Avenue and Flower Street
