Desert Hot Springs is a small city located in Riverside County, California. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Westchester–Monroe Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Desert Hot Springs were the Paiute and Chumash Native Americans who lived there before European settlement. In 1858, prospectors discovered mineral rights in what is now Desert Hot Springs, and began mining gold and silver here. In 1865, General Mariano Rivera visited this area for military purposes; he named it "Riverside Heights" after his brigade headquarters east of San Diego. By 1870, most of the miners had left for other places due to competition from new discoveries in nearby Angeles National Forest and Nevada Territory. In 1892, American businessman George Condon built a hotel here as a stop on his route between Los Angeles and Reno NV. Riverside became an incorporated town on May 20th of that year with a population of 1,000 people. By 1902, when desert towns were given their own police department and fire service, Desert Hot Springs had over 10 residents living within its boundaries!
