Desert Hot Springs is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino metropolitan area. The name "Desert Hot Springs" comes from the Mojave Desert's hot and arid climate which produces very little water for plants or human consumption; instead, it provides a mineral bath perfect for bathing in during summertime. The springs were first discovered in 1887 when prospectors looking for new water sources on the Antelope Valley floor of what is now Riverside County found an underground stream with high levels of calcium carbonate called the Indian Wells Branch. In 1904, Comfort Creek became available to be used as a source of drinking water after being diverted from Mission Viejo Creek eastward under Interstate 15 near their present day location. A small dam was built to store and provide irrigation for some citrus crops that grew there before statehood in 1932 made it possible to divert more creek waters into Desert Hot Springs by enlarging two existing lakeshore reservoirs (the names have since been changed). When federal ownership of public lands was transferred from Mexican Fort Tejon to U.S. Government control following World War II, approximately 92% of all surface rights given out within San Bernardino County were designated as National Monument Wilderness areas including Desert Hot Springs National Monument which encompasses much of today’s town limits including most of Spring Canyon Lakefront Property and much of what is now known as “Desert Hot Springs” golf course property located adjacent to Spring Canyon Reservoir adjacent to Mineral Wells Branch just south of Interstate 15 between I-15 and Temescal Avenue outside city limits until 1984 when these lands were combined with Resort Park tennis complex located adjacent to Mineral Wells Branch north side I-15) remaining parcels are managed by General Services Administration/ Bureau Of Land Management grazing purposes only driving off private land owners access fence along reservoir edge
