The hot springs date back over 150 years and were first used as a bathtub or washroom for miners working in the area around Springerville and White Sands Pass. In 1914, First Lady Alice Paul visited the Springs with her husband Senator Carl Vinson and their son Donald to promote tourism in Arizona after his victory in that year's presidential election. After she left office, President Franklin D. Roosevelt paid a visit to the Springs on January 16th, 1945 where he relieved Army Chief Engineer Harry Hopkins of his duties at White Sands Pass because of wartime shortages of engineering supplies due to World War II activity throughout much of America. Desert Hot Springs was designated as a National Monument by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 14th, 1944 pursuant to Executive Order 9200 which requires Federal protection for archaeological sites within national boundaries while private property remains exempt from such protection under Federal law).
