The town was established in 1887 by weary travelers after spending three days walking from Pasadena to Mexico City on foot. This area now known as Desert Hot Springs was first populated by Bedouins and farmers who used the hot springs for health benefits and ease of childbirth. In 1922, the city of Palm Springs built a small town next to Desert Hot Springs in order to attract people to stay there during their visits to Southern California. However, because Palm Springs was much closer to the center of traffic than Desert Hot Springs, it quickly became less popular and abandoned. In 1941, two brothers named Don and Norman Cox started a hotel called The Grapeseed which still stands today in downtown Desert Hot Springs. They were Originally looking for a location that would be convenient for tourists but not too close or busy so that locals could watch them operate their business without having to worry about noise or pollution from nearby hotels and motels. Don Cox died in 1976 but his brother Norman continued operations until 1984 when he sold the hotel and motel complex to Interstate 10 Development Corporation which then leased it back to the Cox family until 1998 when they donated it back to the government as part of 92nd Street Promenade Project which also included creating new shopping malls in Northridge and Glendale Heights adjacent thereto. In 2002-2003 both cities reached agreements with IH10DC under which they would manage all aspects of development including infrastructure such as roads, water supply (retaining rights over springs), trash management systems etc., through an entity known as IH10DESERT HOT SPRINGS ZONING AUTHORITY INC..; however this arrangement ended after 2003 due various disagreements between cities about jurisdiction over certain areas within IH10DESERT HOT SPRINGS . Today desert hotsprings consists mostly of high-end housing developments near interstate 10 while smaller towns continue exist along SR 91 north including Old Town Scotts Valley which is located on top of an active geothermal field - one half mile wide at its widest point!

Desert Hot Springs is a small town in Imperial County, California, situated on the Mojave Desert. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. It is part of the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. The first permanent Europeans to visit what is now Desert Hot Springs were three Mormon missionaries who came in 1858. They named it Basin Cottage after their hometown, Salt Lake City, Utah. A post office was founded at Desert Hot Springs on March 2, 1861, and it remained in operation until September 15, 1922. The name "Desert Hot Springs" was given to it by Captain John Sutter who discovered and named springs here while exploring the Owens Valley in 1846-47. The townsite that today includes Desert Hot Springs was settled by Southern Californians in the early 1900s as a result of Rancho Mirage's acquisition of hundreds of acres (yards) of desert land north of Los Angeles for development into a resort community called Mouse House Canyon Resort and Spa. As development proceeded through the 1920s and 1930s, many new homes were built atop older hotel buildings within what is now the town square and business district. By 1940 there were more than 1,000 people living in Desert Hot Springs proper; however during World War II most residents abandoned their homes for military service or other reasons outside the area due to shortages within California that caused widespread destruction throughout much of North America from air raids over Leningrad to fires in downtown Santa Barbara County. In 1948 an act by then-Governor Edmund G Brown granted citizens residency rights beginning with election day that year; this Act also provided for school enrollment opportunities for local children which has been essential to maintain some level of social cohesion since then among all types of residents since no general services are available without registration until things like fire prevention become available later on when those services may become necessary againutherland resident David Saucier lobbied hard unsuccessfully with state officials to have his golf course annexed into town limits but eventually this too failed due largely Interstate 10 running right through town center limit between I-10/Rancho Mirage Boulevard & I-5/Redondo Beach Boulevard making access difficult if not impossible without construction vehicles travelling long distances each way just past Our Lady Of Guadalupe Chapel & down I-10 eastbound only
