Desert Hot Springs is a small city in Kern County, California. The population was 6,871 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Mojave Desert southeast of Palm Springs and east of Carson City. The area now known as Desert Hot Springs was first surveyed by Captain James Wolk in 1853, although no permanent settlement happened until 1876 when prospectors discovered mineral rights to the area. In 1877, a post office was established at Desert Hot Springs with Wolk as its first postmaster. Mining started soon after and production continued until 1911 when the last gold mine closed down due to overmining and pollution from nearby Pahrump Valley coal mines that were also operating at that time. In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared it part of the National Forest Service which later became part of USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service in 1966. In 1993 Unocal Corporation acquired all mining operations within 2 miles (3 km) of town limits for their oil exploration project called Basin Head I which would eventually lead to groundwater contamination problems throughout much of Kern County including some near Desert Hot Springs itself.
