In the early 1900s, Desert Hot Springs was a popular tourist spot in southern California. The town boasted an abundance of wildflowers and mountains to view, as well as many Shooting Range facilities that allowed residents to practice their shooting skills. One such range was the old Winchester Armory, which became one of the most common firearms stores in town. One of the first firearms retailers in Desert Hot Springs was J.C. Higgins & Sons, which operated from 1903-2007. Higgins founded the business with his brother John C. Higgins Sr., who served as its president until his death in 1935. The store specialized in handguns and rifles, but also sold ammunition and other related items. In 1907, J.C.-C.'s son John C.-H (JR) joined the company as vice president and general manager for allGun Store divisions within CA’s United States Firearms Company subsidiary at its incorporation on April 15th of that year (the parent company being incorporated on October 25th). JR would eventually become senior vice president and Chief Operating Officer upon consolidation with USFC two years later on February 12th 1911 when USFC merged into National Firearms Corporation (NFC) - a key figure behind America’s Gun Control Movement during this time period! The following year saw another milestone for Desert Hot Springs; it became home to what is now known as NRA's world headquarters! Mr Jack Keane - an NRA board member and long-time resident of towns east of Reno - purchased property adjacent to Winchester Armory where he erected a state-of-the-art building that remains today one of NRA’s organizational hubs! It wasn't until 1923 however when NRA moved into its current facility located adjacent to Redding Municipal Airport - just across from Baja Fresh Mexican Grill! This move finally put Pahrump Valley squarely within NRA's purview...and hasn't looked back since! From humble beginnings at Winchester Armory to becoming one of America's leading firearms retailers over 100 years ago, J C Higgins & Sons has been an integral part of firearm history in Desert Hot Springs!
