Desert Hot Springs is a small, but well-known and important town in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The springs are located about an hour’s drive south of downtown Los Angeles on I-10. The springs were first discovered in 1875 by George C. Marshall while traveling through the area as part of his survey for Bureau of Mines lands west of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In 1896, William H. Keith built a small station at the springs to serve visitors andpackaged goods for travelers on his exploration trip from Mono Lake to Mount Whitney. Keith named the spring “Desert Hot Springs” because it was so hot there during summer months when he used it. In 1911, desert cattleman Hyrum Smith established a ranch at what is now called Desert Hot Springs Boulevard just north of the springs, naming it after himself and his wife, Helena Bischoff Smith (1858-1929). Over time, other people also founded ranches here including John Sutter (1868-1936), who opened Sutter's Soap Factory in 1899; Roybal Humphreys (1920-1996), who operated a gas station/motel here from 1951 until his death in 1996; and Harry Elmer Barnes (1909-1987), owner of Barnes Air & Space Museum adjacent to the springs where one can explore aircraft parked nearby during Aerospace Week events at nearby LAX Airport. As US military activity increased around World War II outside North America due to strategic bombing raids against Japan targets within Los Angeles County and Orange County—the key transportation corridor linking these areas—the Deseret News began publishing articles extolling desert life opportunities near Los Angeles International Airport known then as "The Gilded Cage." On July 20, 1945—two days before Japanese surrender—the last aircraft flew out over LAX with U2 pilot Francis Gary Powers aboard when USAF Lt.
