By 1945, almost 60% of the population was American servicemen or women living in desert towns along Highway 95B between Palm Springs and Inland Empire National Park. Many businesses and residences were built on top of ancient hot spring pools that had been used as baths by Native Americans for centuries before Europeans arrived in Southern California. In 1957, Desert Hot Springs became part of Municipal Services District No. 2 which included most major cities within its boundaries including Los Angeles, Anaheim Hills, Pasadena, Orange County and San Bernardino County. In 1965, Municipal Services District No 2 was dissolved and it became an unincorporated community known as "Desert Hot Springs". The community has continued to grow since then with many new businesses being opened up around the hot springs such as a casino resort called Gold Rush Resort & Spa which opened in 2013 adjacent to one of the original spa pools from 1892 (the now closed Aliso Canyon Spa).
