In 1875 outlaws killed five men working on a gold mine near present day Cathedral City while they were bathing in the creek which later became known as "The Canyons". In 1927, when developers began acquiring land around Desert Hot Springs for development, it was decided that the springs should be protected so they could continue to be used for their therapeutic purposes unbothered by people living nearby or using them commercially. A campaign was started to gain public support for this effort which led to passage of legislation protecting the springs throughout much of Southern California in 1929.
