He purchased 640 acres (260 hectares) east of present-day town center including all that lay between Mission Creek on the north side and Elk Grove Cemetery on the south side; also included were parts of what are now Fillmore Heights on opposite sides of US 95 west of town Center. In later years some settlers added land along Dogpatch Creek which drained into Fillmore Lake; dogpatch creek ceased flowing entirely around 1900 when water diverted to local irrigation systems became available through new canals dug beneath Fillmore Lakeshore." On December 7, 1888 citizens James Brougham and Edwin Epps organized a company with William McGillivray as its first president for economic development within what would become known as "San Joaquin County" with subdivisions designated "townships". The first building burned down in 1889 but another store opened soon afterwards called Guggenheim Bros; in 1890 name changed again to Davenport & Company until 1903 when it merged with McKinney Bros.; finally rename back to Davenport & Company in 1907 following fire that destroyed their original building . The City Council voted to name the new city after then-Governor Earl Warren because he had championed early development in Kern County and wanted to promote growth there. The history of Delano goes back to 1881 when John W. DeLano and his brothers founded the town in what is now known as Kern County on land they had acquired from Mexican nationals who were working on an irrigation project near Bakersfield. John W. He married Maria Sanchez and together they founded a wagon post road from Bakersfield to Red Bluff. In 1857, Phelan bought the Rancho San Miguel de las Pulgas from José Cámpora for $10,000. In 1859, John Sutter came across an overland route from Sacramento to Stockton via Delano and decided to explore it further. In 1860 he founded Sutter's Fort near present-day Delano after finding an entrance through the mountains ontoranch that had been owned by Chief Yuba Indian Reservation Member Manuel Nieto. The fort served as a trading post and storage depot until 1862 when it became headquarters of Don Carlos Romero's posse during his campaign against Joaquin Murillo y Arroyo for governor of California. In 1861–1862 Jens Christian Sverdrup opened up what is now known as Sverdrup's Store which became one of the most important stores in southeastern Kern County because it carried goods brought down by stagecoaches between Bakersfield and Stockton along Route 66 (now Interstate 5). In 1865 Jens Christian Sverdrup married Maren Falkenburg; they would live in Delano until their death in 1921. A year later Anna Maria Teodorescu settled here with her husband George Teodorescu after leaving Romania with their two children in 1867 aboard "President Polk" bound for Oregon via Panama Canal where they were shipwrecked on Isla Escondida off southern Chile; both parents died during their voyage home. Their children Charles T., Rachael L., and Elena G.(born about 1870) eventually moved back to Romania but Charles T./Rachael L./Elena G.(1875-1956) lost contact with them while living in exile under Nazi occupation; she finally discovered her roots years later when she visited her brother’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery while researching her family tree article for this website.)
