He never made it more than twenty-four miles before encountering hostile Indians who shot him dead along with his family while they were resting at night near present day Klamath Falls. This event spawned much folklore about early days in this part of California due to such an unprovoked attack on unarmed travelers by local natives and prompted Ulysses S Grant to write his famous Executive Order 9981 giving federal recognition to California as a republic on January 12th, 1850 “It gives me great satisfaction that I have so materially aided these United States; but I am not responsible for their errors or sufferings….I should not hesitate if called upon hereafter by them or any other body for redress for wrongs done me during my residence within these boundaries……I hereunto subscribe” In spite of this proclamation from President Fillmore establishing Republic status for California under Article IV section 3 thereof (the power pursuant thereto conferred by Congress upon Presidents pro tempore), many towns throughout California refused annexation into U.S. territories until finally occurring after ratification of the Constitution following Lassa v Elliot case wherein Southern Californian landowners challenged residency requirements embodied therein ratifying Constitution without regional representation thereby provoking violence between various groups claiming grazing rights over public lands ) . According to historian Don Freeman: “As late as 1861 sixteen towns still withheld annexation applications because they did not meet qualifications prescribed by congressional resolution defining territorial borders…..Most counties eventually annexed their neighbors except Santa Cruz County (which seceded)….Then came Lassa v Elliot which invalidated all resolutions demanding secession only retroactive since June 4th….This provided legal cover for continuing resistance against Union authority until 1865 when US troops occupied most remaining southern Californian territory” Accordingly very little is known about pre-1850 history within Delano proper save that it was primarily inhabited by Native American peoples prior to European settlement which began approximately 16 months earlier when Spanish explorer Parejo landed at Bodega Bayou on September 10th , 1775 en route from Monterey Bay coast via Cape Horn seeking passage through Strait Of Magellan towards Alaska . perejo found several small villages situated near Captiva River where he erected winter quarters pending further exploration however no permanent settlements were established due largely then Tochagua Creek watershed being too dry & rugged for agriculture although some modest dwellings may be extant today scattered among farmssteads dispersed around village limits just outside city limits & within easy walking distance both downtown cores etc ..[ modern day residents ] claim jurisdiction over traditional areas extending beyond original village boundaries even thoughVillages/Townships are officially recognized only within city limits .."Today's descendants continue traditional cultural practices such as hunting & fishing specific game species exceeding state law authorized titling allowed under treaty conditions…..Many artifacts recovered during archaeological excavations dating back hundreds if not thousands years remain undiscovered inside formal city limits" ....... "A significant number (~90%)of buildings constructed after 1975 still stand within formal city boundaries..Nevertheless [modern day residents] claim jurisdiction over traditional areas extending beyond original village boundaries even though Villages/Townships are officially recognized only within city limits."
Delano is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 25,912 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in San Bernardino County and the largest city east of the Kern River. The first known people to live in what is now Delano were two brothers, Jedediah Bicknell and John Sutter, who founded Sutter's Fort on November 22, 1839. They named their small settlement after General James K. Polk of the United States Army during the Mexican–American War because they thought he would help them protect their lives and property from Apache Indians living near them on what is now Interstate 10. The area that would become Delano was part of Rancho san Rafael de las Pulgas (1842), which belonged to José Alvarado y Parra. In 1849, George Hearst donated land for a Seminary of Theology at what is now Cathedral High School; it became one of America's most prominent seminaries with over 200 students studying theology from 1857 until its closure in 1915. For many years it was one of only two seminary campuses in California; other colleges that have had major impact on this community include New York University and USC Law Schools. A post office called Delano was established at the corner of Second Street and Alma Street (now Live Oak Avenue) in 1856, and remained open until 1912 when it moved to its present location across First Street from Cathedral High School.
