Delano is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 5,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. Delano is adjacent to Petaluma and Concord. The town was founded in 1847 by John Denton, who homesteaded land near what is now the intersection of U.S. Route 101 and State Route 26. The name "Delano" comes from Spanish meaning "field of palmas." In 1865, the first post office was established in Delano with Wm. Ayer as its first sender. In 1916, the community changed its name to honor Supervisor Elijah Plessy because he had fought for racial segregation in California's state capital city of Sacramento. The townsite that comprises today's Delano was platted in 1851 by George Pemberton under the name of "Pine Valley." By 1855, when it became part of Contra Costa County, Pine Valley had become too large for one village and was divided into two areas - Delano and Pittsburg Landing - which were then combined into one municipality under new governance called Pittsburg Landing Township (now Delano). On July 1, 1860 – days after San Francisco's incorporation as a city – Pittsburg Landing township ceased to exist when City Hall Annex No.. 2 became Fillmore without its village component; it has never been again organized as an entity separate from Contra Costa County since then! On October 24th 1886 local farmer Lorenzo Johnson purchased 6 acres east of present-day Telegraph Road and built what would later be known as The Johnson House which still stands today on that property...This house once served as both headquarters for United States Marshal District 3 (now Contra Costa) during their investigation into bread riots taking place throughout Central California between March 1886 and November 1888...On January 10th 1907 President Theodore Roosevelt made history by becoming the first sitting president to address a public meeting at The Johnson House....It should be noted that this event took place less than 4 months before he left office due to diplomatic troubles with Mexico over his proposed Tilden-Hartley Act...A more recent building on this property which also serves today as a restaurant/bar is called 'Dolphin Cove'. In 1906 developer Emmet Sheehan bought 186 acres adjacent to The Johnson House for $5 per acre; development began on this land which would eventually result in creation of Park View Village (). Today DELANO CENTER offers retail shopping opportunities as well as living & dining options within minutes' walk or car ride from downtown San Francisco

Delano, California is a small town in Orange County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded by George and Caryl Delano in 1869 as a small farming community on the banks of the San Joaquin River. The town grew rapidly with the discovery of oil and gas reserves in nearby Kern County in 1906. By 1914, Delano had become an important transportation center for oil production in Kern County. The townsite that now makes up part of Delano was first settled by Californio Mexicans who arrived during Mexican America's land grant period (1846-1848). After Mexico's cession of California to the United States, most of these Mexicans were expelled or driven out by Anglo settlers who came to populate what is now Orange County. Many Mexicos who remained behind adopted U.S.-born names such as George or Caryl and continued to farm their land until after World War II when they were forced to leave again due to drought and other economic factors. In 1869, George and Caryl Delano bought some 160 acres (72 hectares) near present-day Delano from John Sutter for $6 per acre ($160/km²). With this purchase, the couple became one of the earliest farmers in what would later become Orange County. The couple soon began growing crops— barley, wheat, peas, beans—and built a log cabin on their new property which served as their home until 1903 when they moved into a more permanent structure called the "Hacienda". During this time period there were only two schools within miles of Delanos: one operated by mission nuns from San Francisco and another run by Texas Mormons from Rancho Tejon near Wasco Heights; both were closed during World War I because too much enrollment occurred among American soldiers stationed nearby at Camp Kearny (now Mount Shasta). The outbreak of World War I interrupted development at Hacienda del Rey because housing for troops became available only after 1915 through purchases made by Colonel Edward Murchison Jr., partner in Murchison Oil Company (later Chevron Corporation). early 20th century map rendering courtesy USGS It wasn't until 1909 that water supplies reached Hacienda del Rey from an underground well that had been drilled since 1892; before then residents used wells located around town which often gave insufficient water results due to heavy useage over time without filter media or other improvements necessary today such as reverse osmosis membranes etc....... In 1910–1911 schoolteacher Mrs Wm Fenton took delivery of her first bus using horse drawn carts making it possible for students living away from school to get here safely each day... From 1902 until 1924 there was also a post office but no telephone service......During this time many people left Hacienda altogether because access to water was poor including Mr &Mrs Atherton who quit irrigationin 1919 following rain erosion which destroyed entire field where house stood.........Between 1907-1914 about 100 families left for various reasons.......... p 12-13 One reason given for leaving was lack of good farmland elsewhere.............................. massive mudslide struck El Sobrante Creek Valley just upstream from current day site late 1870s
