Delano, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census and is estimated to have 2,000 residents as of 2018. It is part of the San Joaquin Valley region. The history of Delano began with Spanish colonists who arrived in 1769. The area that now includes Delano was part of Madera County until 1853 when it became part of Fresno County. In 1881, the townsite of Delano was patented to David Hume Halleck by Major General James K. Polk for $2,500. In 1905, Halleck donated land to the City of Delano for development including a school and park which were completed in 1912 and named after him. In 1925, Josephine Baker made her first visit to America here and this event helped spur development around town which included an agricultural center (the present day Smithfield Market) as well as businesses like Winfrey's Clothing Store (now Journeys), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (now PCH International) and Bankers Trust Company (now Wells Fargo). In 1945-46 during World War II many local families took up arms against Nazi occupiers and many people lost their lives or were taken prisoner-of-war here; some notable residents include Harry Bridges (a founder member of United Farm Workers) and his family who are buried at nearby West Point Military Cemetery #1; also buried there are members of the Haas family who were influential in building what is now downtown Delano; After World War II ended in 1945 most businesses closed down but one significant exception was Winfrey’s Clothing Store which continued operations until 1973 before being purchased by Sears Roebuck & Co.; from then until its closure in 1997 it operated as a department store known simply as Sears Holdings DepartmentStore#2 inside then University Plaza Shopping Center across from Job Corps Training Center on Dominguez Hills Boulevard. After years long struggles with bankruptcy & closures numerous other stores closed throughout much of specialty mall era including: Macy’s (#3 on list), Journeys (#5 on list), Lord&Taylor (#6 on list), Sears Holdings DepartmentStore#1&2 all within 5½ miles radius surrounding downtown or suburbs like East Palo Alto/Mountain View/Livermore etc., although prior thereto several other anchors such as Ziegfeld Follies Theatre left too having been built adjacent to open shopping plazas filling what had once been rural farmland martially vacated since major freeway construction projects had eliminated muchcker rolling countryside making way for high density suburban sprawl adjacent Interstate 5 northward replacing last remaining intact rural white acreage thereby completing process whereby central valley became largest leading edge city/county in nation along I-5 Corridor

The town began as a small settlement on the San Joaquin River in 1848 and grew rapidly during the 1850s when gold was discovered in the area. The railroad arrived in 1864 and made Delano an important transportation center. Today, Delano is home to several colleges and universities, as well as a number of businesses and restaurants.
Delano is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 8,561 at the 2010 census. The town of Delano was founded by Spanish colonists in 1821 and named for José de la Cruz del Arroyo. The first post office in Delano opened on October 15, 1825. The original town had a population of only fifteen people and was located near what is now the University of California at Santa Cruz campus. In 1856, the town passed to San Luis Obispo County and was renamed after president James K. Polk who had died two years earlier while in office. In 1908, the school districtwide referendum decided to move all high school students from their old site on El Camino Real (now part of UCSC) eastward to new sites south of SR 187 (now SR 84). This action increased student enrollment at both campuses by about 50%. Eventually all high school students were moved to new sites within the city limits when they were replaced by local elementary and middle schools which became known as "Elementary Schools of Greater Delano". The city's first store opened its doors on December 12th 1902 with Wm Hsu as the proprietor. A post office called New Beginnings opened on January 1st 1903 with Lillie Pemberton as its first clerk. J H Snyder started his own grocery store which became one of the most popular businesses in town and helped give life to downtown Delano around that time also becoming an important commercial center for area residents & businesses alike. In 1916 Ethel Merrill married Harry Merrill who ran a clothing store on Main Street until his death in 1978; her son John has continued this tradition today! One unique feature about early days of this small community was that there were no streetlights or other means for streets to be seen during dark hours! Residents relied upon lanterns that would be lit up once per night during daytime so streets could be traveled without fear of being lost or running into something unexpected at night! Young adulthood wasn't easy back then - many times you didn't even have your own bed! ! In order eventually provide some lighten up life Downtown & make it more navigable during nighttime operations City Hall built 2ndhand gas lamps which allowed Streets merchants (& others) easier access to illumination during daytime business hours- still goes strong today thanks #glesson
