In 1912, the City of Delano merged with neighboring Riverside to form Riverside-Delano Township which still exists today as a separate municipality within San Bernardino County. In 1969, when Interstate 5 crossed through central San Bernardino County, it truncated Delano's downtown area causing great hardship for businesses that depended on access to Interstate 5 traffic or customers coming into town for shopping purposes or conventions/festivals (e.g., Summer Olympics). To prevent further damage to what had been once America's leading agricultural community, then-Mayor Bill Weiser developed a plan called "The Cities Plan." This strategy called fordarlingtoningofDelanosouthwest sideandbuildinga newcommercial districtaroundthenewinterstate5 expressway exit.(This plan never happened due to lack of funding.) In 2001, following approval from voters via referendum, Mayor John Burton formed an advisory committee which recommended developing a new downtown district around I-5 instead.(I-5 remains built collaterally near delanovillexitingtown)) A new plaza has been constructed south of I-5 between State Route 34 (SR 34) and SR 128 (PCH) offering fresh air opportunities outside during inclement weather conditions while nearby businesses continue their operations indoors during normal business hours In 2003 an agreement was reached among several local organizations led by Mayor Burton that would create "One Community" within the boundaries of Riverside-Delano Township - intended as both an educational opportunity for residents living within OneCommunityanda place where they could collect services such as water bill collection or vehicle registration without having to leave their homes
Delano was founded in 1851 by the brothers George and Lorenzo Delano. The town became a post office in 1854, and a railroad station was built in 1865. In 1876, the delanos founded a flour mill on their farm west of the town. The mill continued to operate until 1915. In 1935, the town passed into public hands and is now part of Avila, California.
