The name is most likely derived from a Spanish word meaning "homesickness" or "sorrow." The first Europeans to reach Delano were Jose Maria Narváez and Gaspar de Portolà on October 20, 1769. They met up with Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on their way to explore San Francisco Bay. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Delano was made by José Gabriel Moraga on December 6, 1836. It was named after José Antonio María del Valle y Ortega y Gasset who surveyed the area for General Joaquín Castro during his campaign against Mexican forces under Mexican general Porfirio Díaz. In 1851, Samuel Morse established a post office at Delano despite being turned down by Captain John Cranch because it would be too far away from San Francisco for postal service. Morse became one of America's first millionaires through his ownership of the post office shares. In 1872, Don Miguel Estrada bought land off Morse and turned it into an agricultural community called Rancho del Norte which included parts of today's towns of Delano and Arroyo Grande. By 1926, about two-thirds of the resident population were Anglo Americans while one-third were Latinos; as late as 2000 just over half of all residents identified themselves as Latino or Hispanic only. During World War II, many American servicemen took advantage of available housing opportunities in the area to build barracks and other facilities that later became known as Post-Depression Homes (PHDs). In 1945–46 more than 1,000 men from Clovis used Phds to build Veterans' Village near east side streets in downtown Clovis including current day North High School Campus where IHOP stands today

Delano is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,436 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The town of Delano was founded by Manuel Nieto and Juan de los Reyes on December 1, 1847 as Rancho las Haciendas de los Nietos y del Rey (ranch number 9). The town grew up around the original ranch hands who continued to live there until 1959 when it became part of the city of San Bernardino. In 1915, the city merged with neighboring Riverside to form a single municipality which still functions as an unincorporated community within San Bernardino County. Delano's first post office opened in 1857 and closed in 1861 because of lack of mail service from Sacramento. A new post office opened on February 14, 1861 under the name "Pasadena". The last post office in Delano closed on January 6, 1965 due to its amalgamation with Riverside. On May 2, 1860 Mexican-American cattleman Zacarías Gomez married Andresina Flores from Rancho Pajaro east of Delano and moved into what would become known as Flores' Villa or "Gomez Villa." After five years he decided to move his herd some 5 miles northward to what is now San Gabriel Valley where he started a new ranch named La Malinche Creek after one of his daughters who had died young at age 10 while working for her father on their rancho near Sylmar Springs (now West Covina). After three years he again changed locations and this time bought about 60 acres (24 hectares) near present-day Glendora Heights which became known as Flores Ranchi Misionero Estancia or "Flores Mission House"). There were only two homes - One built by Gomez himself circa 1865-67 used as living quarters for his employees; another home built by later owners during World War II was turned into a store that sold ammunition and grenades before it was destroyed by fire in 1951 but has been reconstructed several times since then including most recently in 2007 using funds raised through popular historical preservation efforts; both residences are still extant today and are currently listed on both the National Register of Historic Places listings for Los Angeles County and Pasadena City Hall www.nrponline.org/.
