Delano, California is a small town located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 7,869 at the 2010 census. It is one of the most diverse and ethnically rich communities in Northern California. The name "Delano" comes from two Spanish words: "delantera" meaning "the side of the mountain" and "ana", meaning land or place. In 1872, Wm. Brougham discovered gold on what would become Delano Heights (now part of the city of San Rafael). The town was founded on October 17, 1872 by James Phelan, who named it after his father-in-law and namesake, Don Jose Altamont Phelan. A post office opened in 1873 and remained open until 1915. In 1905, an rail line began serving Delano as well as other towns on its route between Sacramento and San Francisco (later known as the Bay Bridge). This railroad made Delano a major center for wine production; by 1925 there were more than 100 vineyards in Delano alone. Vineyards continue to be a vital part of the town's economy today; many are family-owned and -operated businesses that employ dozens of people directly or through subcontractors. In 1916 Delano became one of fourteen towns included within the new City of El Sobrante; this move happened because then- mayor Harry Cook wanted to create a municipally controlled water system that would be more efficient and equitable than those found in surrounding counties. Today El Sobrante is known for its growing number of commercial gardens – home to both organic produce growers and conventional farmers markets – which has helped contribute significantly to its overall diversity as well as its growth rate over the years.
