Delano, California is a small town located in the central section of San Joaquin County, California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,752. The town is named after Commodore John D. Delano and his family who settled there in 1849. The name means "happy place" or "peaceful station." The first post office for Delano opened in 1852. The first store was built in 1853 by J.P. Butler and Aimee Bardwell. In 1857, Wm Henson established a blacksmith shop and bakery in what is now Main Street corner First Avenue East & Third Street North; it became known as Henson's Store until 1912 when it became known as the Herrick Hotel (now called the Delano Hotel). In 1862, Harry Self built a schoolhouse on present day Fourth Street between Second and Third Avenues South which continued to be used until December 1st 1870 when it was burned down by an arsonist during a non-violent demonstration against white supremacy led by John Brown (Keystone Center for American History). In 1865 William Ewing started construction of what would become today's east side of Main Street from First Avenue NE to Second Avenue NE with three homes being purchased along the way: one at Seventh and Vine Streets NW (later renamed Park Row), one at Eighth and Vine Streets NW (later renamed Washington Square West), and one at Ninth and Vine Streets NW (later renamed Elmira Place). This stretch of Main Street remains today part of downtown Delano although much has changed since then including both its address as well as its character since these homes were constructed over 100 years ago! On October 15th 1888 Reverend Simeon Boren posted notice on doorsteps throughout town that free housing would be available to anyone willing to labor hard constructing new roads westward from Sacramento through eastern San Joaquin County! This offer attracted many people who had been forced out of their homes due to this terrible drought which had reduced crop yields statewide from over 60 bushels peracre to just 3/4 bushels peracre! Eventually about 400 families accepted this invitation with work starting on September 25th 1889 under direction of James Fenton who had come from nearby Stockton with his father-in-law Jens Jensenfelt! Over time more families arrived but due mainly to disease not hard work; however, Fenton refused any offers for payment so that all workers were treated equally! By 1893 only about 50% of original houses still standing were occupied although most residents moved away during World War II because they could no longer live near such destructive warfare zone From 1926 until 2003 most businesses closed except for two small shops - Giannini's Pizza Parlor off FourthStreet between Second and Third Avenues South & Dahlgren's hardware - which operated until 1976 when both stores went out OF BUSINESS due to lack of customers plus large debt incurred during Prohibition years A vibrant nightlife surrounded downtown Delano thanks largely to several bars/restaurants including Louie's Lounge off FifthStreet between Second & Third Avenues South (& SixthStreet north), Joe's Barbeque south off SixthStreet between First&Third Avenues North (& Seventhstreet east) as well as numerous pubs/lounges open late into the night such as Rascal’s Saloon on EighthStreet between First&Third Avenues North & Sixth Streets Northeast (& TenthStreet east) which opened in 1927 adjacent to Town Hall One very important aspectof downtown life prioritized socialization comparedto economic development; consequently 8 streetcars ran daily providing transportation within town limits regardlessof entertainment options available outside During World War II almost every business closed except one small shop - Giannini’s Pizza Parlor off Fourth Street between Second and Third Avenues South & Dahlgren’sHardware - which operated until 1976 when both stores went out OF BUSINESS due to lack of customers plus large debt incurred during Prohibition years

Delano is a town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. Delano is located on the direct route of the Central Pacific Railroad across theSacramento River from Sacramento. The town was founded by John Sutter in 1849 as part of his land grant to Rancho San Bernardino de Anza and later became part of the city of Sacramento. The first post office in Delano opened on April 1, 1851. At that time it was known as "Anza". In 1857, a new post office called "San Francisco" opened in nearby Yuba City after Mexican General Antonio Lopez Ruiz abandoned his siege of Sacramento during the American-Mexican War and relocated his army to that area. On January 25, 1861, Californio Juan Bautista Alvarado granted title to 54 ranchos (lands) stretching from present day Delano eastward to Auburn; these were eventually patented to various farmers who developed them over time including David Hacketter and James Irvine. By 1870 there were 43 families living in Delano with 535 acres (220 ha). A Chinese man named Chuan worked for Hacketter for many years before he fled China for unknown reasons around 1875 or 1880; this event is sometimes cited as being related to tensions between Chinatowns which had been increasing due to stricter anti-Chinese laws enacted by Governor Pahrump following a public outcry brought about by an attack against one of their number on December 8th, 1877 in San Francisco's Financial District which left four people dead and twenty-six injured (). In 1911 William Randolph Hearst bought some adjacent land from James Irvine for $10 per acre ($640 per km²). As Hearst began developing what would become Hearstland through building roads and other infrastructure within what are now parts of Sacramento County - including much of today's Delano - he needed access to water supplies so he built a dam across the Sacramento River just north of present day Delano Lake. Today we see most evidence associated with this project: construction sites along Gun Hill Road (now Interstate 80) nearpresent day Golden Gate Park; power plants situated onleased parcels downstream; and reservoirs locatedjust northeastof present dayDelano Lake where several thousand acre feet (3000 m3)of water are diverted each year () providing drinking water not onlyfor residents but also businesses adjacent thereto (). Hearst advanced development plans forward even beyond those originally contemplated when he acquired the property; he wanted homesites overlooking Lake Oroville () then under construction (), reservoir properties () and Harbor Channel (); these have all since been lost or destroyed however harbor channel has been preserved as part ofUltrarunning parkhaneland tour().
