Davis, California is a town in Kern County, California. The population was 35,397 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and is bordered by Nevada to the east and south, and Bakersfield to the west. Davis was founded in 1853 by John C. Fremont as an agricultural center on land grant from Spanish Governor Manuel Nieto. The name "Davis" comes from General James Hodge's headquarters at Fort Davis in present-day Phoenixville, Pennsylvania., after he routed Mexican forces near Davis Creek on February 14, 1852 during the Mexican–American War. In 1861, Confederate Major General George Armstrong Custer used Davis as his winter quarters for a few weeks before his attempt to cross the Colorado River into Arizona. In 1872, Gold Rush miners started arriving in droves through what is now downtown Davis and soon platted entire blocks of land around what are today First Street and Third Avenue; this area became known as "the diggings." By 1886 when it had become one of Southern California's leading citrus counties,[1] agriculture began to decline while mining boomed; however, local boosters managed to keep Davidsoy open until 1912.[2] The 20th century saw rapid growth due to industry such as oil production (Davis had been identified as a natural gas producer),[3] construction of Interstate 5 (now I-5) which passed through town in 1957,[4][5][6][7][8] casinos (such as those built adjacent to Interstate 15),[9][10][11] farming grapevines for wine production,[12] medical research,[13][14],[15],[16][17] and other businesses that have continued into our current era such as Verizon Wireless' first location outside New York City inside what once was downtown Davis [18], Apple Inc.'s original Headquarters building [19], Walmart's largest store ever opened here [20], Asphalt Paving Plus - North America’s oldest private asphalt paving company - since 1901[21]; numerous churches including Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church – established in 1904 - St. Anthony’s Episcopal Church – established 1907 - Holy Name Cathedral – established 1911; many homes were also constructed during this time such as: Bishop Ford House – erected 1909; Mrs. Laddie Polk House – erected 1910; Drury House – erected 1912; School District No 1 Administration Building (later renamed Old Executive Office Building) 1914; First Baptist Church 1915 - Second Baptist Church 1916 - Evangelical Lutheran Parish church 1917 - United Methodist Parish church 1918 .... During World War II there were several major installations here including: Navy Yard 1942 - Army Air Forces Plant 45 1947 ; Atomic Energy Commission Site 50 1951 .... After years of decline starting with World War II my ancestor John C Fremont founded Nike Corporation which created basketball shoes here 1949 . We are blessed with over 350 years of history within just 10 miles or so!

At its peak in the 1870s, Davis had a population of around 10,000 people. The town's decline began soon after, as railroads arrived andquickly replaced stagecoaches as the town's primary means of transportation. By the late 19th century, Davis had shrunk to a single street and only a few buildings remaining from its heyday as a thriving smalltown.
