Davis, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 55,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The city's name comes from the 1851 donation of land by General George C. Marshall to the University of California in exchange for an endowment for that institution. The first knives were made here in 1852 by Capt. Isaiah Morse of Oakland and Sgt. John Sutter of Sacramento as part of a military supplies shipment bound for Yreka, California. The townspeople soon began making their own knives and spears from sharpened pieces of wood or obsidian found near their homes or collected on farm properties nearby. In 1865, Captain Morse's son-in-law John Romer started a locksmith business in Davis that became one of Northern California's largest and most successful businesses until it closed its doors in 1906 due to World War I rationing limits on key materials used in manufacturinglocksmithing products. Davis saw increased knife production during World War II because local farmers turned to growing crops for sustenance during the war effort; however, knife production resumed following the war when demand increased for tools needed to maintain agriculture among Allied forces occupying Japan and other parts of Asia . After Japanese occupation ended in 1945, Davis experienced a period characterized by high levels of crime and social unrest which led to an increase in emergency police response called "Operation Matador". This program involved deployment into communities throughout Contra Costa County with orders toakedown unruly citizens suspected of having possession or use OF any firearms not registered with the government or possessing items banned under Japanese law such as submachineguns or gasoline-powered grenade launchers

Davis, California is a city in the Central Valley of California, United States. The population was 953,545 at the 2010 census. It lies about 120 miles (190 km) north of Sacramento and 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Fresno. Davis is one of the most populous cities in the state and it is also the seat of Kern County. The first permanent settlement in what is now Davis was made on August 29, 1846 by nine Californians who had come overland from Los Angeles. They named their new town San Francisco after General strikes that year led to violence throughout California between labor and land owners. In 1847, three men - James Waddell, John Goodwin and Charles Sutter - founded what would become Kern County on Rancho Rinconada near modern-day Bakersfield. Waddell homesteaded 810 acres (348 ha), giving him title to 1/3rd of all present-day Kern County. Goodwin acquired 5 square miles (15 km2 or 6% of present-day county) on November 3, 1850; Sutter took 4 square miles (10 km2 or 4% of present-day county). On February 14, 1850, a group of eight men under the leadership of Orville Cushing arrived in what is now Davis from New Mexico Territory with intent to purchase rancho Rinconada from James Waddell for $5 per acre ($2 per hectare). When they failed to find anyone interested in purchasing their holdings they disbanded and returned home without any assets or livestock but with an idea for how to improve this undeveloped area: build a schoolhouse and landing strip for transportation by small boat across Tulare River

On December 12, 1853 the town voted to become a city and it did so on December 25th of that year. The first mayor of Davis was John Ladd and he served until 1861 when he was replaced by William Cranchis-Boyd. In 1863 the United States Army established Fortification Hill as a military post in what is now downtown Davis. By 1865 the fortifications had been abandoned and Davis became an agricultural center with small businesses growing up around the fortifications. During World War II many soldiers were stationed at Fortification Hill which led to its name change to Camp Sherman in 1944 after General George Smedley Sherman ordered all US artillery located within fifty miles of San Francisco be moved to Camp Sherman effective November 15th of that year
