Davis, California was founded in 1879 by George Davis. Davis was a surveyor and landowner who purchased 640 acres of Rancho Nuevo from José Joaquín Cámpora. The rancho extended from the Sacramento River to the Feather River. In 1881, Davis used his surveyors' reports to purchase additional land, which he named Rancho Santa Clara de Atascadero after his patron saint. The first houses were built on the original 640 acres in 1882.
