In 1870–71 local businessmen organized a land rush when they claimed 160 square miles (460 km2) of rolling farmland that lay east of downtown Danville along the Feather River between Mud Creek and Donner Lane; these lands were later patented to George Citty by Governor Edmund Dallek on October 1, 1872. The resulting city developed rapidly due to its location – close enough to both Sacramento City Hall and then San Francisco but far enough away not to be affected by its social or economic influences – as well as its advantages as an agricultural center: grain exportsadded $5 million annually during the first decade after incorporation; lumber contributed more than $25 million over that time period alone.
